Cubs Convention 2019

This post is a little different than what I usually write, but I like to share my travel experiences from time to time. I am a huge Chicago Cubs fan, and this year I decided to finally make the trek to Cubs Convention at the Sheraton Grand Chicago.

Cubs Convention, or Cubs Con as I will refer to it henceforth, is a fan festival held every January. It's a great way to get pumped for the upcoming season and hear stories from players and the front office. They have discussion panels, autograph sessions, vendors, and other events going on throughout four floors of the hotel.

As you could probably guess, it's absolutely packed with Cubs fans. I flew in from Rochester, NY so I booked a room right in the Sheraton (which I highly recommend you do -- it was nice to have a room right there to escape too when it got too busy). There's a lot going on, but I was able to watch all of the panels I wanted to see and even got to meet one of my favorite players!

Left to Right: Javier Báez, Willson Contreras, Kris Bryant, Ben Zobrist

L to R: Daniel Descalso, Albert Almora Jr., Ian Happ

The panels were my favorite part of the Con. I'm not an autograph hunter; I'd much rather hear from the players and staff and take those memories with me. There were several with different topics ranging from the Baseball Operations update to interviews with the players about their off the field hobbies, and during each fans were given the opportunity to ask questions.

Cubs Con was a whirlwind three day event and I'm glad I was able to attend. You can read more about the event and what I did at my post at Cubs Den.

January Shades Club Review and Coupon

Even though it's winter in New York, I still like having a collection of sunglasses to choose from. The sun still comes out sometimes, and when it does, it's even harsher due to the glare from the snow. Luckily Shades Club sent the perfect pair of winter sunnies for January!

*Disclaimer: This box was purchased by See, Shop, Love! at a discount in exchange for an honest review.

Shades Club sends expertly-curated shades made in the same factories as the world's best brands. There's a $100+ value in every box. There are four subscription prices:
  • Monthly: $45
  • 4 Months: $112 ($28 per box)
  • 6 Months: $162 ($27 per box)
  • 12 Months: $288 ($24 per box)
All orders ship with free 2-3 day shipping to the U.S. and international shipping prices vary based on the destination.

The January shades are wayfarer style with blue tinted lenses and white frames. Last month Shades Club sent aviators, my favorite style, and this month they've sent my second favorite! These are lightweight but well made and the white frame is great for winter. They're appropriately titled Snowbirds and are available in four other colors.

The Shades name is branded on both the arms of the sunglasses and in the corner of the left lens. This month's shipment came with just the shades and a microfiber case (which doubles as a cleaning cloth), but Shades Club will throw in random extras sometimes, such as a koozie or sunglass hanging kit. Your first box will also come with a branded fold up case (see that here).
Bottom Line: My second pair of sunglasses from Shades Club was great! I love the style, and I like that they're a different color than what I would normally purchase. Usually I stick to black frames, but the white ones look great.

January Daily Goodie Box Review

Daily Goodie Box is different than your average subscription box. It isn't exactly a subscription -- they send out boxes each month to different users and the boxes are completely free!

*Disclaimer: This box was sent to See, Shop, Love! in exchange for an honest review.

Daily Goodie Box is totally free. You'll never be asked for credit card or any type of payment information. Boxes are not guaranteed, but in order to put your name in to receive one you can create a profile on their website and also interact with them on social media (links at the end of this post).

In exchange for the box you'll have to leave a few sentences of feedback with your opinions of the products. This will keep you in good standing in order to receive boxes in the future, so be sure to log in and share your thoughts after you try everything.

The January box had seven deluxe samples and full-sized items to try. Here's what was inside:
  • Blister Balm Protective Lip Treatment: This balm is perfect for winter, as it helps relieve chapped and cracked lips to minimize future cold sore outbreaks. It has a minty clove flavor with natural ingredients and 100% natural jojoba botanicals.
  • Don't Go Nuts Whitewater Chomp Bar: I've had these bars before and they're delicious. They're nut- and gluten-free and are also certified organic and non-GMO. I love the yummy flavor and will definitely buy more of these!
  • Rustic Maka ILLUMINATE Activated Charcoal Whitening Tooth Powder: This all-natural, mineral-filled tooth powder uses the absorption of activated charcoal to detoxify and remove stains caused by teeth, coffee, and wine. It also has a blend of bentonite and kaolin clay with baking soda to gently polish and strengthen teeth.
  • CUSA Tea: This sampler has one each of English Breakfast, Oolong Tea, and Mango Tea. All three are premium organic instant teas.
  •  Shrewd Food Brickoven Pizza Protein Crisps: These have 14 grams of protein per serving and are made with real cheese and Italian spices. I haven't tried them yet but they sound delicious.
  • Tiger Balm Active Muscle Spray: I'm a big fan of Tiger Balm's pain relief products and this one is great for hard-to-reach areas. It sprays on evenly and relieves muscle aches, sprains, and soreness. I advise holding your breath when you spray this and for a few seconds after, as I did inhale a bit of it the first time I used it.
  • Karma Wellness Water Immunity Booster: I've had these waters in the past and they're really neat: the nutrients are in the cap and you push them down into the water when you're ready to drink it for optimal freshness. This flavor includes 1,000 mg of Vitamin C4, Zinc, Berry Extracts, and Tea Extracts that provide antioxidants to support immune function.
Bottom Line: Daily Goodie Box is a really fun way to try out new product, especially since it's free! I enjoyed this month's box, especially the Tiger Balm and Don't Go Nuts products. Be sure to create a profile on their site today!

January Degusta Box Review and Coupon

If you like discovering new snacks and foods, Degusta Box is a really affordable and fun way to get a great selection of items to try! Their boxes are huge and always have great full-sized items.

*Disclaimer: This box was sent to See, Shop, Love! in exchange for an honest review. Post contains affiliate links.

Degusta Box costs only $19.99 per month for a big box of 9 to 14 full-sized foods, such as sauces, cookies, chips, and more! Shipping is free to the U.S.

The January box had 13 total items from nine brands, as well as one bonus sample-sized item. My favorite thing about this box is that they have a wide variety of food types and brands represented, so there's always something new and interesting to try.

  • La Tortilla Factory Low Carb Flour Tortillas ($4.89) - This was the featured product of the month. The tortillas are low carb and high in fiber, protein, and flavor. They're also non-GMO and made with unbleached wheat flour.
  • Partners Crackers ($3.99) - These crackers are slow-baked and made with buttermilk, extra virgin olive oil, and a touch of sea salt. You can snack on them on their own or use them for dips and other appetizers.
  • MaraNatha ($9.99 for a 12 oz jar) - These packets feature the Coconut, Caramel, and Almond almond butters.
  •  Lundberg Family Farms Vanilla Chai Baked Grain Bites ($3.49) - These are light and airy and had a touch of vanilla chai flavor. They're non-GMO certified.
  • Vitabella Strawberry Pillows ($5.99) - Subscribers will receive either this flavor or the Choco Crispies cereal. The strawberry is so good! They're USDA certified organic and made with 100% organic Italian whole rice.
  •  Idahoan Foods Mashed Potatoes ($1.39 each) - There is a packet each of the Smokey Cheddar and Bacon and Cheddar and Sour Cream flavors. These are instant potatoes made with 100% real Idaho potatoes blended with smooth flavors.
  • Chocolat Frey ($3.29) - I received the Blond Crunchy Almond flavor. This chocolate is made with more than 25% nuts and Swiss chocolate.
  • Smashmallow Crispy ($1.99 each) - I love these bars! The flavors are Strawberry and Cream and Cinnamon Churro. The strawberry was my favorite.
  • Sweet Baby Ray's Hot Sauce ($3.29) - This hot sauce is made with aged cayenne and garlic and is great on everything!
  • Michel et Augustin (gift item) - Michel et Augustin cookies are some of my favorites, so this was a nice bonus item! It's a little cookie made with crispy shortbread, milk chocolate, and nuts.

Bottom Line: The total approximate retail value for the January Degusta Box is $29.71, not including the MaraNatha packets and Michel et Augustin cookie. This is well over the $19.99 price tag, and is much cheaper than if you bought all the items separately at the store. My favorites this month were the Smashmallow and Vitabella!

The BUB Club Solar Box Review - Quarter Two

Lil BUB is an internet-famous cat that is super adorable, and she and her Dude (Mike Bridavsky) started a subscription box, The BUB Club, that sends you exclusive BUB merch and also gives back to pets in need! I received my second quarterly box early by request.

*Disclaimer: This box was purchased by See, Shop, Love!

The BUB Club box has has four subscription levels at the following prices:
  • Lil Box: $23 every three months for an exclusive 8" x 8" photo, sticker, postcard, and either a pin, button, magnet, or other accessory
  • Earth Box: $39 every three months for stationery, stickers, and accessories and a $5 credit to the BUB store
  • Solar Box: $59 every three months for all items from the Lil Box, some from the Earth box, and 2-3 exclusive themed gifts such as scarves, hats, shirts, or more and a $10 credit to the BUB store
  • Galactic Box: $115 every three months for some of the merch from the three previous tiers, a signed BUB photo, and a limited edition handmade item such as a necklace, tea cup, or more and a $15 credit to the BUB store
Shipping is free to the continental U.S. With each box, you'll also help donate money for special needs pets as follows:
  • Lil Box: Raises $1.50 per box for special needs pets and donates five bowls of food to homeless pets every quarter
  • Earth Box: Raises $5 every box for special needs pets and donates five bowls of food
  • Solar Box: Raises $10 for special needs pets and donates five bowls of food
  • Galactic Box: Raises $15 for special needs pets and donates 10 bowls of food

This is a review of the Solar Box (third tier). BUB commissions different artists each month to create the exclusive merchandise, including the box design itself. This quarter's box is "Yummy" themed and had food-inspired items.

Normally the second quarter box would not ship until  February, but the BUB team offered first quarter subscribers the option to receive their second quarter box early to make up for some shipping delays with the first box.

The Solar Box had five sets of products, with 16 total individual items. Unfortunately I misplaced my informational sheet that listed all of the artists for each item, so I can't tell you who made the merch this month (so sorry!). But here's what was inside:
  • BUB Pillow: This little pillow is so adorable! It's nice and sturdy and I actually use it as a toy for my cat. She loves knocking it around!
  • BUB Patch: This patch features BUB as a hamburger and is really cute and detailed. I think I'm going to add it onto my backpack.
  • BUB Pop Socket: I hated Pop Sockets for the longest time because I thought they were pointless. But then I received this one and couldn't say no to adding to my phone, and I finally understand why they're so popular! It really does make it easier to hold my phone and doubles as a kickstand for watching Netflix, etc.

  •  Sticker Sheet Packs and Die Cut Stickers: I have a feeling this subscription will feature a lot of BUB stickers, but I'm not complaining. I added the BUB sundae one to my laptop and am saving the others for adding to birthday cards, etc.
  • Postcard Pack: These six postcards are printed on thick, sturdy cardstock and have illustrations of BUB as various foods, plus a Dude tattoo-style one. I especially love the hamburger BUB!
  • Magnet: This magnet has BUB's face on it as an orange and is similar to the designs received in the first quarter box.
  • 8x8" Photo Print: Each Solar Box will also contain a high-quality photo print matching the quarter's theme. To be honest, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with these, but they're super cute and possibly may get framed in the future. I think they'd make great decorations for a kid's room.

Here's one more up-close photo of the BUB patch.

I've seen some criticism of this subscription box regarding the item value related to the box cost, and I can see where this box really is for BUB super fans. I'm pleased with both of the boxes I've gotten so far, plus I know that my purchase helps donate food and money to pets in need, but if you aren't someone who sees yourself needing a quarterly box of BUB-themed items, this box may be a bit of a stretch when it comes to price.
Bottom Line: The "Yummy" Solar Club Box had a lot of cute items! My favorites were the die cut stickers and the pillow. I'm excited to see what next quarter's theme will be!

January Gramma in a Box Review and Coupon

Gramma in a Box is a monthly surprise of cookie and candy crafts that are fun for all ages! You can share the box with your family members who may live far away, or treat yourself to some fresh baked goodies straight from Gramma.

*Disclaimer: This box was sent to See, Shop, Love! in exchange for an honest review.

Gramma in a Box sends three cookie and candy crafts each month with enough supplies to make up to 20 treats. Almost everything is included, the only things you may need to supply yourself are household items like a bowl to mix in or a spoon, etc.

Here are the pricing options:
  • Monthly: $20 per month
  • Three Months: $55 every three months (save $5)
  • Six Months: $110 every six months (save $10)
  • 12 Months: $220 every 12 months (save $20)
Shipping is free to the U.S. and taxes are included. If you want to cancel, do so by the 25th of the month.

The January box was New Year and Football themed. Along with all of the ingredients you'll need, there are instruction cards for each treat with ingredients lists and allergens on the back.

The crafts are so creative and are a lot of fun to do! They're appropriate for young kids and the young at heart, but of course younger kids will need adult supervision. I like that the crafts are simple but still entertaining to complete.

The first craft is New Year Sparklers. It involved melting white chocolate and coating pretzel sticks with the chocolate and confetti sprinkles. There were more than three pretzels included, but I broke some of them in half when I was opening the package. I still dipped them in chocolate, but I only photographed these three because they were the prettiest ones.

The second craft, Game Day Crunch, was my favorite. It was the easiest to make, too: just mix up the included popcorn, pretzel sticks, and cranberry/sunflower seeds/M&Ms with the melted chocolate left over from project one and smooth out on the (included) wax paper to dry. There were also peanuts included, but I didn't add them to mine. I also added in more of the confetti sprinkles from project one.

The third craft is always sugar cookies with three packets of frosting and sprinkles to decorate. This month's package had two footballs and five other fun shapes. The cookies are baked by Terry, the owner of Gramma in a Box, and sealed up tight. It's recommended that you complete the crafts within one week of receiving the box, though, so that they are at their freshest.

I made a combo of New Year's and football cookies. The "NYE" is for New Year's Eve, not Bill Nye (or, it could be Bill Nye if you want!). I also tried to make a Carolina Panther and...failed. But he still tasted good!
Bottom Line: I love Gramma in a Box! I look forward to seeing what crafts Gramma comes up with every month, and I especially enjoy sharing them with my family and eating them after.

Birchbox "The Hair Texturizing Kit" Review

I am obsessed with hai care products. There are times when I have to deliberately tell myself not to go to Sephora when I'm at the mall because I know I'll buy another one that I don't really need. My favorites are texture sprays, and the Hair Texturizing Kit from Birchbox helped me find some great new favorites!

*Disclaimer: This box was purchased by See, Shop, Love!

I picked up this kit for 50 percent off during Birchbox's after Christmas sale for only $15, but it's still available at the full price of $30. $15 was an absolute steal, but it's still a really good deal for $30.

The kit comes with six different texture products, all of which are travel-friendly sizes. I decided to purchase not only because I love trying new texture sprays, but also because I always need one for travel.

I saw some old favorites (bumble & bumble and Oribe) and new brands that I had been meaning to try, so I really couldn't pass this kit up. Most of these retail for $30+ each full-sized, so I really can't emphasize enough what a good deal this kit is.

I assumed that every product would be a texture spray, but there's a texture foam from Ouai and a more hairspray-like one from Fave4.

I'm saving the best for first: the Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray ($46 full-sized). Anyone familiar with haircare will know that Oribe is the top of the top when it comes to styling products. I absolutely love this brand and treat myself to their products on occasion, but generally they're a little too pricey for me to use on a regular basis. I've used this spray before and it is absolutely amazing. It provides just enough texture and hold without weighing my hair down or feeling chalky. It also smells so good! I'm going to save this for special occasions.

Another favorite of mine is the Bumble & bumble Thickening Dryspun Texture Spray ($31). This provides a light-to-medium hold and is super gentle on hair. I currently use it all over my hair, but I especially like spraying it at my roots because it provides lift without a lot of residue.

The Living Proof Full Dry Volume Blast ($29) is another spray I've used before and I have to say it's just okay to me. It does provide decent hold and texture, but my thick hair falls out of the style after a few hours when I use this. It's probably best for someone with thinner hair than me.

I was excited to try the amika un.done Volume and Matte Texture Spray ($25) because I love their dry shampoos. This spray felt the most like a dry shampoo to me but it did provide decent texture and hold. I probably wouldn't purchase a full sized bottle, though.

I've used a few other products from Ouai before that have worked well, so I was also excited to try this Ouai Dry Texture Foam. I currently use a texture foam from IGK Hair (Sunday Funday) and it works great, so I was comparing this to that. Unfortunately, Ouai's version did not do much to transform my hair. You're supposed to apply a ping pong ball sized amount to dry hair (working from ends to roots) to add texture, but it really didn't add anything to my hair. Maybe it's because my hair is already pretty thick -- this may work better on thinner hair.

Last up is the Fave4 Texture Takeover oomph Enhancing Spray ($18). To be completely honest, I was least interested in trying this one because I saw that it was a three-in-one texturizer, dry shampoo, and hair spray. I usually stay away from hair sprays because they make my hair too crunchy, but I was very wrong on this one! It's actually my favorite of the bunch and I plan to buy a full-sized bottle once I use up my current texture sprays. I especially love the price point; only $18! It provided the best hold and texture and my style lasted all day long.
  • Visit Birchbox to purchase the Hair Texturizing Kit
Bottom Line: The exclusive Hair Texturizing Kit from Birchbox was perfect for me! If you like experimenting with these types of products I highly recommend picking up this kit. I hope you find some new favorites, too!

Mama June's Southern Treats Review: Box 2

Mama June's Southern Treats is a new quarterly subscription that's perfect for the Southern Belle in all of us! Each box is full of the best sweets and treats from the South.

*Disclaimer: This box was sent to See, Shop, Love! in exchange for an honest review.

Mama June's Southern Treats ships quarterly (once every three months) and costs $34.95 or $119 annually with free shipping to the U.S. The boxes do ship internationally as well with a $15 flat rate shipping fee.

You'll receive down home goodies plus a fun non-food item or two in each box. The first box was Georgia themed, but this box appears to have a more general Southern theme.

The box contained six food items and two extra goodies. The box arrived in December so it had lots of cozy things for warming up during the winter months. I'm not sure how cold it gets down south, but up here in New York I definitely appreciate a nice warm mug of hot chocolate!

  • Southern Treats Hot Chocolate: This mix has a rich, smooth flavor and there's enough in the bag for a few cups of hot chocolate.
  • Mama June's Fudge Brownies: You can make a batch of Mama June's famous Fudgy Brownies with this mix, made of 100 percent soft red whole wheat flour, rich cocoa, sea salt, and baking powder. The flour is stone milled from wheat grown on a family farm in Middle Georgia.
  • It's Better With Bacon Dip Mix: It definitely is better with bacon! This dip is great for chips, bread, fresh sliced veggies, or anything else you want to have it with. It's easy to make with just one cup of sour cream and one cup of cream cheese.
  • Holiday Cookie Cutter: I think mine got a little warped, but I actually like the imperfect shape for cookies! It's made in the U.S.
  • Chenatlin Colshat Pecan Pralines Scented Soy Candle: I thought that this was a sweet dip at first, but I love it even more because it's a candle! It smells so good and even has little crumbly bits on top, so you can see why I'd mistake it for food. It's eco-friendly and made with 100 percent soy wax, natural cotton wicks, and coconut buttons.
  • Lane Southern Orchards Blueberry Pecan Preserve: This is made with locally-grown crushed blueberries and orchard-fresh Georgia pecans, capturing the best flavors of the south. The company was founded in 1908 and has been growing peaches, blueberries, and pecans for over 100 years.
  • Wondermade Marshmallows Sugar Cookie Marshmallows: These taste fantastic on their own or in a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. They're the perfect size for s'mores, too. I love the sugary flavor!

  •  Southern Treats Mug With Spoon: I love this mug! I think there were different color variations sent, since the info booklet has a blue one and I received a green (my favorite color). The little stirring spoon is such a cute and helpful detail, and I especially adore the "Bless Your Heart" inscription. I've kind of always loved the passive aggressive nature of that famous Southern statement!
This second box from Mama June's Southern Treats was wonderful! All of the food items were delicious and a lot of fun to try, and the non-food items were great as well. I especially love the mug and candle.
Bottom Line: This box is a great deal for $34.95 a quarter and a fun and easy way to experience the best of Southern cooking and lifestyle!
