Shero Science Skincare Review

A few weeks ago I wrote an introductory post about Shero Science. They tailor skincare products to your specific needs, and they sent me two of their serums to try.

When you visit the Shero Science website you can fill out a quick survey that will match products to your skincare type and needs. You can learn more about the company and how they match products at my intro post here.

I have oily skin and Shero Science sent me the Power-C AM Serum and 1% Nightly Retinol CE Repair PM Serum to try. If you don't currently use serums I highly recommend adding them to your skincare routine, as they're potent products that will really help transform your skin!

The Power-C AM Serum is a brightening serum that has three powerful active ingredients:  L-Ascorbic (Vitamin C), Vitamin E and Ferulic Acid. These ingredients reduce signs of aging, fade dark spots, brighten dull skin, and protect you from daily pollution. After two weeks of use you'll see skin that's more plump, balanced, and glowing.

I've been using this serum for about three weeks and I have to say, my skin does look way more balanced! Even though I have oily skin, I get these dry, rough patches on my cheeks when the weather gets colder and the air less humid. I also have some redness, and this has seemed to even everything out. While my skin still has some signs of the above issues, I think that with prolonged use this serum will be really helpful in evening out my skin.

Next up is the 1% Nightly Retinol CE Repair PM Serum. If you're not familiar with retinols, they're a very powerful anti-aging ingredient that can have some adverse affects on your skin at first. For first time users, it's recommended that you use this only once or twice a week to let your skin get used to the ingredients, and as you build up tolerance you can add it into your routine more frequently.

The serum is in a lightweight lotion form that has dermatologist-grade ingredients, including 1% retinol to stimulate new skin cell production, reduce fine lines, and fade dark spots and scars. After four weeks of use you should see brighter, younger skin.

Now, for a word of warning: READ THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE BOTTLE! I've used a few retinol products before so I thought I knew what I was doing, but I misread the label at first and used this serum once per night, which ended up being way too much for my skin. I thought the bottle said to use twice daily and I thought, whoa, that's nuts! But as you can see from the picture of the bottle above, it says twice a week. The photo above is what can happen when you first use a retinol, but please note that your skin may react differently and this is actually normal. Since retinols are so powerful, your skin will go through a "purge" where it's turning over old skin. In the past, I've had acne breakouts with retinols, but this time I developed red, dry patches that kind of felt windburned.

I'm not telling you this to scare you off of this serum -- this is actually what it's supposed to do! It's just my fault because I started using it way too frequently and it caused an augmented reaction with my skin. If you use it as directed just once or twice a week for the first week or two, you should see some purging but not nearly as strong as mine. The upside is that after backing off from using the product so frequently and working in a hyaluronic acid serum, my skin recovered and now seems way smoother!
Bottom Line: Shero Science has a great line of dermatologist-grade products and they're sure to have something that will meet your specific needs. They aim to send you exactly what you need so that you get positive results without having to spend any money on something that won't work for you. I've had a great experience with the serums I've tried!
