Glee Gum Review and Coupon

Glee Gum is a natural chewing gum with no artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, or preservatives. I've been a fan of theirs for a while, and I'm excited to introduce some of their newest products: Glee Gum Pops and Sugar-Free Wintergreen and Sugar-Free Bubblegum flavors!

*Disclaimer: These products were sent to See, Shop, Love! in exchange for an honest review.

Glee Gum makes their products with chicle, a tree sap that is sustainably harvested to help conserve the rainforest. They're also Non-GMO Project verified. They have 11 flavors of gum, plus fun candy making kits (read my review of their Make Your Own Gummies Kit here and some of their other flavors here).

The new Glee Gum Pops are here just in time for Halloween! They're the world's first and only 100% natural bubblegum pops. Each bag has 15 pops in three flavors: Crisp Green Apple, Sweet Strawberry, and Juicy Orange. They're gluten-free, allergy-friendly, vegan, and certified kosher.

These pops are wonderful! I love their strong, juicy flavors, especially the Crisp Green Apple. They taste even better than other bubblegum pops out there that I've tried. The gum center is a bit more chewy than other pops, but other than that these are a great product that kids (and adults!) will love.

Top to bottom: Juicy Orange, Crisp Green Apple, Sweet Strawberry
One other thing I did notice was that the wrappers are secured very tightly, which is good as far as being tamper-proof, but they might be a little difficult for younger kids to open. That's nothing that a parent couldn't help with, though.

I love Glee Gum's packaging. The Glee Guy mascot is a cute retro design, as is the rest of their design. It's also eco-friendly: all of the packaging is recyclable with no blister packs. Their Classic gum is sweetened with fair trade cane sugar and brown rice syrup. These new Sugar-Free flavors are sweetened with 100% xylitol from American birch and beech trees for added dental benefits.

I've chewed the Classic Bubblegum flavor before and the Sugar-Free version is just as good! You'd never know it was Sugar-Free. It has a nice sweet bubblegum flavor that lasts a pretty decent amount of time. The Sugar-Free Wintergreen is refreshing and great tasting as well.

As you can see from the photo above, the pieces are smaller little squares. I actually chew two at a time for a little bit bigger of a piece. Each box has 16 pieces inside.
Bottom Line: The new Glee Gum Pops and Sugar-Free flavors are great! I love the juicy flavors of the pops and the new Sugar-Free gum packs. The bubblegum is a fun treat and the wintergreen is nice and refreshing. I definitely recommend Glee Gum for Halloween and beyond!

Make Your Own Candy Kit Review and Giveaway [CLOSED]

Remember my review for Glee Gum?  If not, that's okay -- but I'm back with another product from Verve, Inc., the makers of Glee Gum, that's perfect for the holidays.  They have a series of Make Your Own Candy Kits that are great gifts for curious, candy-loving kids (yes, all of that alliteration was on purpose).

They have three kits available: Make Your Own Gummies, Chocolate, and Chewing Gum.  I chose to try the Gummies kit because I thought that one sounded the most interesting.  The gummies are made from carageenan and agar, which are gels found in seaweed.  Most gummies are made from gelatin, which is made by boiling down animal bones.  I like the sound of seaweed gels better.

The ingredients included are sour mix, colored/flavored sugar, powdered seaweed, seaweed, and molding starch.  There is enough to make quite a large batch of gummies, but I only used it to make a few this time around.  The whole process took about 30 minutes for me on my own, but if you were making these with children I'd imagine it would take a little bit longer.

The first step was to take out the little seaweed and let it soak in a bowl of water.  While it was soaking, I readied my candy molds.  The kit doesn't come with any plastic molds, but you could easily use your own if you had some around the house.  I didn't, so I used the molding starch that comes with the kits.  In theory it's a great idea because then you can create whatever kind of molds you want, but I found that it practice it was a bit more difficult.  First, it was hard for me to smooth out the starch (I'm a perfectionist and wanted it to be completely smooth, but soon realized that wasn't going to happen).  I tried using a little toy dinosaur as a mold, but it didn't work so well, so I gave up and used the cap of my lip balm to create little circles.

This was definitely the messiest step, and even though I don't have young children I can imagine they'd need a lot of adult supervision, just to ensure that the molding starch didn't get all over the place!

Next it was time to create the gummy mixture.  The base was the powdered seaweed, which is pictured above on the left.  All that needed to be added was a 1/2 cup of water.  I then stirred it for about a minute until it looked like the photo to the right (the instructions said not to worry about lumps).  The most noticeable thing about this mixture is that it smells...not-so-yummy, we'll say.  This might be off-putting to some kids when making it, but just ensure them that the gummies don't taste anything like how they smell at this point!  Once the mixture was stirred, I added the seaweed that had been soaking in the water and microwaved the mixture for two minutes (this can also be heated on the stovetop).

After microwaving, the instructions said to take out the seaweed with a fork.  The gel substance around it is carageenan -- it kind of looked like ramen noodles to me!  The smell was stronger after heating, as can be imagined, but it mostly went away after adding in the flavored sugar mixture.

After adding the sugar packet, the mixture should be heated again for one minute or heated on the stove until it starts to bubble.  I loved the bright pink/red/fuschia color!

Then it was time to pour the mixture into the molds.  My dinosaur didn't come out so well, but the little circles were easy to pour in.  I'd definitely recommend using very simple shapes for these.  Once the shapes were set, I put them in the refrigerator for ten minutes to cool.  You can keep repeating this process until you use up the mixture or have all of the gummies you want, the mixture just needs to be reheated each time.  That's another benefit of using the carageenan gel instead of gelatin, it's "thermally reversible," so you can heat it up as many times as you need to.

And here are my finished gummies!  The sour sugar coating was added (on the right) by shaking up the gummies and the sugar in a sandwich bag.  I was obviously most excited to see how they tasted after all of this.  They were much softer than I thought they would be, and they had a nice light flavor.  They weren't as as sugary as most store-bought gummies, so that might be something that kids would have to get used to.  But overall, I think this kit was a lot of fun and would be a great gift for kids.  Not only does it give them the chance to make their own candy, but it can be used as a learning opportunity to teach them about how raw materials like seaweed are used around the world.

Bottom Line: If you're looking for a fun and educational gift this holiday season, I recommend the Make Your Own Candy Kits from Glee Gum!  I had a lot of fun making mine and I'm turning 24 soon, so they're great for those who are a little older, too.  What I love most about these kits is that they teach kids about how ingredients from nature can be combined to create such fun candies.

Glee Gum Review and Giveaway [CLOSED]

I chew gum like it's my job.  I just feel better when I'm chewing on something; I also grind my teeth at night so my jaw just always wants to be moving.  When I found out that Glee Gum was offering products to review and giveaway on GiveawayBlogs.com, I applied right away.

I'm thankful that I was chosen to review this product, because I really love it!  I had heard of Glee Gum before, but hadn't tried it prior to this review.  My favorite thing about the gum is that it's made from chicle (and is, in fact, the only gum in the United States that contains the ingredient), which is sustainably harvested from Sapodilla trees in the rainforests of Central America.  The chicle harvesting also provides an income for thousands of forest-dwellers, and an incentive to leave the trees standing.

Glee Gum is made from simple, all-natural ingredients, not like the ingredients in most chewing gums.  There is no artificial coloring, flavoring, preservatives, or aspartame.  I received all eight different flavors to try, and I must say I really enjoyed them all: Bubblegum, Tangerine, Refresh-Mint, Triple Berry, Peppermint, Lemon-Lime, and Cinnamon.  My favorite was definitely Peppermint.  I usually choose mint flavored gums over fruit flavors, but I liked this Peppermint because it wasn't like others I've had.  It was slightly sweet along with being minty, and just overall it tasted really great.  But, like I said, there wasn't a flavor that I didn't like--they all taste great!  The larger packs contained 18 pieces, and the smaller ones had 2.

The gum's flavors didn't last an exceptionally long time, but it wasn't any less than other gums I've had.  The consistency stays nice and chewy, which I appreciated.  My only (minor) complaint is that the pieces were a bit on the small side in my opinion, so I would pop two in my mouth at a time instead of just one.

In this photo you can see that Glee Gum is affiliated with 1% For the Planet, and that the gum is also GMO and Gluten-free.  They even have a number of "Make Your Own" kits: Chocolate, Chewing Gum, and Gummies.  I haven't tried these, but they sound like they would be really fun.  Each kit contains all of the ingredients you need to make your own treats, but they also include information on the origins of the raw materials.

Glee Gum is manufactured by Verve Inc, which was founded by Deborah Schimberg of Providence, Rhode Island.  About 10 years ago, Deborah traveled to Guatemala with her family and discovered the "chewing gum trees."  Amazed and intrigued by this new discovery, she was inspired to create a "green" chewing gum made from chicle.  She brought back several blocks with her from her trip, and experimented in the kitchen with her kids to create the perfect gum.  Those modest origins have made way for the socially and environmentally conscious company that is Verve Inc!

Bottom Line: I'm impressed by Glee Gum for a lot of reasons.  First, the gum is delicious and stays nice and chewy.  Second, it's made from natural ingredients and supports sustainability and social consciousness. What's not to love about that?
