September Bestowed Box Review

My first experience with Bestowed was in August, and I was very impressed by the array of healthy foods they sent.  I was curious to see what they'd include in their first-ever themed box, September's "Back to School" package.

This month's box contained eight items total and had a good variety of salty and sweet snacks.  Even though I've only tried two Bestowed boxes so far, I've noticed that they try to include easy pre-packaged snacks as well as things you can use as ingredients in more elaborate dishes (does that make sense?).

  • La Tortilla Factory White Whole Wheat Soft Wrap Minis - These little wraps contain only 50 calories and will be put to good use.  I like to make quesadillas as a snack and since these are smaller I won't feel as guilty about eating them.  They're also great for sandwich wraps, so I might throw some stuff together in one and take it with me for lunch at work.
  • Funky Monkey Fruit Snacks - I received the Carnaval Mix (sp) and I absolutely loved it!  It contained freeze-dried organic banana, papaya, pineapple, and apple.  I've only ever tried one other type of freeze-dried fruit and I didn't care for it, but these were nice and crispy and had a lot of flavor.  I'm going to look for them the next time I go grocery shopping.
  • Pearls Black Pitted Olives To Go - I am not a fan of olives, so I offered these to the rest of my family.  Based on how quickly they were devoured, I'd say they were probably pretty good!  The to-go packaging is convenient and also not messy because it's sans olive juice.
  • Nonni's THINaddictives Cranberry Almond Thins - This is actually sitting in my desk drawer at work, uneaten.  I keep forgetting that I have it, but I'm going to make it a point to give it a try tomorrow for breakfast.  It's a twice-baked cookie with antioxidant-rich ingredients like pistachios, cranberries, and almonds and has only 100 calories per serving.

  • Happy Family Happy Squeeze Greek Yogurt - This was my favorite item in the box!  I eat a lot of greek yogurt and this Razzleberry flavor was nice and tart and delicious, and I liked how it had real fruit mixed in.  I like these pouch containers, too, because they're easy to eat.
  • Somersault Snack Co. Cinnamon Crunch Somersaults - I've had Somersaults before but never this flavor, but I'm sure they're going to be great (cinnamon is the perfect flavor for fall).  These are made from sunflower seeds and are 100% vegan and nut-free.
  • Popcorn Indiana FIT Popcorn - This was the item I tried first, and I really wanted to love it, but unfortunately it was just so-so to me.  The popcorn itself had good texture and wasn't too chewy (the way some bagged popcorn is), but I think personally I would prefer something with a bit more flavor.  These bags only have 40 calories per serving, though, so they're a good alternative to regular chips.
  • Pacific Natural Foods Hazelnut Chocolate Dairy-Free Milk - I haven't tried this milk yet.  It's sweetened with brown rice and cane juice and is Non-GMO Project verified with 130 calories per serving.  I like hazelnut a lot so I'm anticipating enjoying this!

Bottom Line: I think the September Bestowed box contained a lot of great options for back to school!  I'm definitely going to look for a lot of these brands the next time I go grocery shopping.  That's probably my favorite thing about Bestowed, is that they deliver so many new brands for me to try.

Autumn Yuzen Box Review

I had been wanting to subscribe to Yuzen for quite a while, and I finally signed up a few weeks ago.  The first box I received was the Fall/Autumn 2013 one, so the products inside probably aren't a surprise to anyone since this box has been out for a while.  I still wanted to review it and give my take on the items and service as a whole, though.

Since I received my box after everyone else, I already knew what was going to be in it after reading reviews on other blogs.  I was still very impressed by the array of items!  The box costs $33 a quarter (it's only sent out four times a year) and there's currently a wait list to join.  I think it was about a month between when I requested a spot and actually received one.  I couldn't find any other price options on their website, so I'm not sure if you can pay for an entire year up front or not.  I wish I had joined earlier, because the price used to be only $25 a quarter, I think.  This was a monthly box at the very beginning, but they switched to quarterly a few months ago.

  • Sanitas Vita-Rich Serum - I'm currently inundated with serums, but I did give this one a try and I like it.  I'm using it as a night time moisturizer.  My skin is so weird, it's oily/combo but it's also pretty sensitive so this is rich enough that I don't need to layer a night cream over it as well.
  • Sphatika Rose Cleansing Foam - I haven't tried this cleanser yet, but once I run out of the one I'm currently using I'm going to work it into my routine.
  • Acure Organics Argan Cell Stimulating Body Wash - I've used one of Acure's shampoo and condition combos before, so I was excited to try their body wash.  This one moisturizes as it cleanses with Moroccan argan stem cells, organic argan oil, CoQ10, sea buckthorn oil, and pumpkin seed oil.  I wish it lathered a bit more, but I still enjoyed using it.

  • Coola Mineral Facial Sunscreen - I definitely needed a new facial sunscreen, so this came at the perfect time.  SPF is still important even in fall and winter, and this one is broad-spectrum and works to improve skin's elasticity.
  • Verve Organics Soul Sister Lavender Nut Sugar Scrub - I haven't used this yet because, frankly, I forgot that I had it.  It smells absolutely wonderful and is made with sugar and coconut and lavender essential oils.  It might be a little too rough to use on my face, but I'll give it a try on my arms and legs the next time I shower.
  • Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel Sensitive - This is the only product in the box that I had used before, and I was very happy to receive another one.  Juice Beauty is one of my favorite brands and the sensitive peel is perfect for my skin.

  • Ajara Ayurvedic Beauty Tea Bath Sachet - I don't take baths (my bath isn't deep enough for it to be enjoyable), but I think I'll use this as a sort of toner.  I plan on dropping it into a bowl of water, placing my face over it, and then putting a towel over my head.  It sounds funny, but it's good for your skin and I'm actually battling a sinus cold right now so I think it would feel great overall!
  • Torie & Howard Blood Orange and Honey Hard Candy - These candies are so good!  I've seen them in stores before but I never purchased them because they're a bit on the expensive side, but now having tried them I think I'm going to buy more.  They're non-GMO and USDA-certified organic.

Bottom Line: I loved this Yuzen box and I definitely think it was worth the $33!  I can't wait to see what's included for winter.  I'm hoping for lots of cozy, peppermint-themed products.

Pijon Box on Living Social!

Pijon Box is a fairly new subscription service that caters to college students and costs as little as $25 a month.  You can choose a box based on gender, and each one sold helps homeless children in need (read more about that here).

I'm no longer a college student and I haven't tried Pijon Box myself, but it's definitely a box I'm interested in!  It contains 5-6 items, including food and snacks, the "essentials," health and beauty, and accessories and gadgets.  Living Social currently has a deal for 4 months of Pijon Box for only $49, as compared to the $108 it would cost if you paid for the 4 month deal up front on the Pijon Box website (or $116 if you purchased the monthly subscription).  Each box contains $40-$55 worth of items, so clearly this is a great deal!

  • Click here to visit the Living Social deal page and learn more about Pijon Box!  This Living Social deal is good through the 25th.

September Birchbox Review

I've been so impressed by what Birchbox has been sending me since I re-subscribed in June.  Prior to that I received quite a few lackluster boxes, but these past four have been really great!

September's theme was Heritage, which kind of missed the mark for me because I'm not really sure what any of these products had to do with that, but regardless I did really enjoy my assortment of samples!  Birchbox has done a much better job of sending me a variety, as opposed to a box full of skin care.

First up is my least favorite product in the box, the Yes To Grapefruit CC Cream.  I didn't dislike this product due to a lack of efficacy, as I'm sure it's a great CC cream, but my skin has a lot of redness so I just need a product that offers more coverage.  It's also hard to judge something like a BB or CC cream on such a small sample, because you really need to use a skin care product for a month or more to truly judge the results.  I tried the light-medium cream and it felt weightless on my skin, and I think it would be great for someone who has a more even skin tone than I do.

I also received a Voesh New York Premium Manicare Hand Mask, which I haven't tried yet.  I actually plan on using it tonight, so I'm very interested to see how it works.  I really hate having dry skin, especially on my hands and cuticles, so I hope this gives me lots of long-lasting moisture.

The Yes To Blueberries Age Refresh Cleansing Facial Towelettes smelled nice and sweet and were great at removing my makeup.  I like to use these types of towelettes when I get home from work and want to take off my makeup, but I don't want to bust out a full face wash because I save that for later in the night.  These are great for on-the-go, but they do remove makeup so if you're looking for refreshment but want to keep your makeup on, these might not be the best choice.

My last two products were color products, which made me really happy.  I love nail polish so I was excited to try the Ruffian Nail Lacquer, which I received in the shade "Hedge Fund."  Green is my favorite color so this was a perfect match for me.  I'm wearing it right now and I love the gold flecks in it!  The application was very smooth, my only gripe is that for $10 a bottle I think it should contain the standard .5 fl oz instead of only .17.

I also received a sampler from the Coastal Scents Neutral Mirage Palette, which contained the shades (clockwise from left) Autumn Sun, Medieval Gold, Miss Marigold, and New Terrain.  I wear neutrals/browns on a daily basis, so this palette is another perfect pick for me!  The top two shades are bright and pigmented, and the bottom two browns are great for blending.  I would definitely consider buying the full-sized version of this palette.

Bottom Line: September brought another great Birchbox!  I've been very satisfied with my products thus far, and I'm so glad that they're including more natural and cruelty-free brands.

Truth In Aging Clear Skin For Life Contest!

Truth In Aging is holding a Clear Skin For Life contest, and the prizes are two acne-treating Baby Quasar devices!  One person will win a Clear Rayz (valued at $249) and another winner will receive the Baby Quasar Blue ($349).

I wanted to share this contest with you because I think Truth In Aging is a great beauty resource.  It was founded in 2008 by Marta Wohrle and aims to provide the honest truth about beauty and personal care products.  Truth In Aging is also great because it's made up of a community of real women who test every product for at least 30 days and write objective reviews, so you can see for yourself which products worked for these women and which didn't.

The two Baby Quasar devices that are being given away use LED lights to help treat acne.  The contest runs until October 11, and the two winners will be randomly selected on October 12th.  It is open to U.S. residents aged 18+.

  • Click here to visit the Truth In Aging contest page and fill out the easy PunchTab widget to enter!

August Little Black Bag Review

I haven't posted a Little Black Bag in a long time.  I actually received a shipment in June or July, but I just never wrote a blog post about it.  LBB is definitely a lot less exciting than it used to be.  A lot of us in the LBB Traders group agree that trading is so painfully slow that the fun is pretty much gone.  I was able to get my best bag yet for August, but only because I had it open while they were moving their warehouse so I had a full two week's worth of trading.  I have one more bag being shipped to me, and then I probably won't open any more unless there is a purse I absolutely MUST have.

I ended up with seven items total in this bag, including the beauty bonus and the Big Buddha handbag that's not pictured above.  I think at one point I had 10 items in my bag, which is way more than I've ever been able to amass before, so it gave me a lot more wiggle room when it came to trading.  Aside from the two weeks of trading, I was also successful because I simply got lucky on a few trades.  For example, I had a Nila Anthony clutch at one point that was only worth $60 or $70 and someone offered me a $120+ multi so I snatched that up right away!

Before I get into reviewing my items, I want to talk about this new warehouse business.  LBB previously shipped from California, which was probably great for those on the west coast, but I'm in New York and it used to take forever for my bags to get to me, even when I paid for the faster shipping.  I had just accepted that fate, though, because it was worth it to get such good deals on merchandise.  There were a lot of customer complaints about poor shipping practices and broken items upon arrival, so LBB moved their warehouse to Ohio.  I'm happy about this because now it (in theory) shouldn't take so long for my boxes to get to me!  The actual packaging of my items didn't seem any different to me, other than that they included about 200 times more paper than was necessary (which really bothered me, because it's so wasteful).  This bag did get to me within three days, but it took a whole week to leave their warehouse because they were backed up with orders.  I could understand that it would take longer to ship out everything after the move, but in that case don't "promise" everyone that their box would leave the new place within 48 hours.

So, moving on.  My favorite item in this shipment was the Big Buddha Granada Hobo ($95).  This bag is huge and wonderful and I absolutely love it!  The retail value seems a bit overpriced to me, but I've seen it on flash sale sites and at Marshall's for anywhere from $50-$70 (so I definitely still got a good deal).  The braided detail is really pretty and I think this is a great bag for fall and winter.  I'm also a big purse girl, so this one is just perfect for me!  LBB made a mistake and released these as a bonus item with an add-to-bag price of $20, so they got snatched up really quickly.  I didn't add-to-bag, but I was able to trade for it and I'm very happy that I did.

The item I opened with was the Hello Kitty Vintage Apples Tote ($70).  This wasn't popular on the site, but I had had my eye on it for a while and I finally just decided to buy it because it was too cute to pass up, plus I needed a new tote bag.  It's much nicer quality in person than I was expecting.  On the site the vinyl handles looked a little cheap, but they're actually pretty sturdy.  My favorite part about this bag is the cute little drawings that make up the background.  I proudly carry this to work, I don't care if I'm "too old" for HK!

I also got another Deux Lux Skipper Wristlet ($40) in green/pink.  I already have the blue one with pink sequins, which I bought from someone on LBB Traders, but I accepted a trade on this because I just love DL and I kind of wanted another.  I had an Izzy & Ali clutch that I was never going to use, so I figured I'd trade down for something I actually liked.  These wristlets are a great size and I think the sequin details are so fun.

My last few items were jewelry and miscellaneous.  I traded for the Bindy Wrap Bracelet ($24) in pink/silver and the Geranium Leaf Drop Earrings ($23), both of which I really like.  I actually ended up selling the Bindy to someone on Traders because she really wanted it and I liked it but could part with it, and I haven't worn the earrings yet.  They're really pretty up-close (sorry that the photo above is a little blurry) and are an interesting design.

I also got a pack of the peach set of the Jolie 3 Pack of Hair Ties ($24), which you can see in the first photo I posted, just because I was curious to see if they were strong enough to hold my thick, Asian hair.  They're decent, but not something I would buy more of.  If I was to get more, I'd probably just buy the fabric and make some myself.  Lastly, the beauty bonus I received was the Michael Todd True Organics Pumpkin Mask.  I kept refreshing my stylist picks to get the pumpkin mask because I already have a ton of scrubs and I didn't need the jojoba scrub.  I like this mask a lot, and I like the Michael Todd brand.  It actually contains real pumpkin, which I know sounds dumb of me to say, but the only other experience I have with a "pumpkin" mask didn't have that as the first ingredient.  It's nicely exfoliating and I would definitely recommend it.

Bottom Line: I'm happy with this LBB.  I got $252 worth of product (not including the mask sample) for around $55.  I also forgot to mention that I opened with a $100 referral credit, so that helped, too.  So far I am impressed with their faster shipping, and I'll consider the week it took for my bag to leave the warehouse a fluke because of their recent move.  This is probably one of my last bags for a while, though, just because the site is not what it used to be.

Check out more photos of my items after the read more.

August Bestowed Box Review

I've read reviews for Bestowed on other blogs and I've been very impressed by their boxes, so I was pretty excited when they sent me a box to review!  Bestowed is a monthly subscription service that, for $19 per month, will include carefully selected healthy snacks for you to sample.  You can also purchase an annual subscription for $209 per year (previously priced at $228).

I really like Bestowed's branding.  The box is bright orange and this delivery was pretty hefty, so I was definitely interested to see what was inside.  I also think their "Hello Yum" slogan is really cute.  The box was neatly packed; everything fit right in place like little puzzle pieces.  Their mission is to help people eat well, and they do this by sending healthy food and lifestyle products, all of which are selected by Heather Bauer, a leading nutritionist and author.  What I really enjoyed about this box is that the informational packet (the Hello Yum insert in the photo above) contained detailed information about each product and why it was selected.

The August box contained a great assortment of food items (nine total).  The item that was making the box so heavy was the Rice Vinegar, which I at first thought was a drink of some sort (before I read the label).

  • Nakano Seasoned Rice Vinegar - I've never cooked with rice vinegar before, so this will be interesting to try.  It's made from whole-grain rice, and the pamphlet suggests using it on salads or roasted veggies.
  • SeaSnax Grab n' Go Roasted Seaweed Snacks - THESE WERE DELICIOUS!  I was already a fan of seaweed before trying these, but the Spicy Chipotle flavor just made them even more amazing than I was anticipating.  My only complaint is that since the seaweed is so light, one package isn't too filling.  I will definitely be purchasing these as an alternative to chips!
  • Lundberg Family Farms Santa Fe Barbecue Rice Chips - These were also really yummy.  They're gluten-free and non-GMO certified, and overall are just fantastic.  They had a great crunch and I actually preferred them over corn chips like Doritos, etc.  Each single-serving bag also has 26 to 27 grams of whole grains.
  • Cascadian Farm Crunchy Oats and Honey Granola Bar - I took this bar to work to eat as a breakfast and I enjoyed it.  It's more of a crumbly, hard bar than a soft and chewy one, but it has great flavor.  It contains only seven ingredients and four grams of protein.  I think these are a great on-the-go snack.

  • Living Healthy World Flax N' Chia Stix - These little packets contain plain flax and chia seeds, which are "nutritional powerhouses" (according to the pamphlet) that are packed with omega-3s and other nutrients.  I have to figure out how I'm going to use these; I know most people mix them in with their smoothies so I'll probably end up going down that route.
  • REBOOT - This supplement is clinically proven to help the body protect itself against free radicals and is made from all-natural ingredients.  It's designed to work with the body's natural processes to stimulate the production of antioxidants, which in turn aids recovery after workouts, stress, sun exposure, and more.  I'm definitely interested to see how these taste.
  • Miracle Noodles Angel Hair Noodles - I am so curious to try these!  My favorite workout guru, Cassey Ho from Blogilates.com, swears by them.  I've heard from some that they're wonderful, and from others that they aren't that great.  I'm not sure how I'm going to cook them up yet, but I hope I enjoy them!  They're zero-calorie, gluten-free, soy-free, and vegan, hence the "Miracle" name.
  • Mighty Leaf Sunburst Green Iced Tea Pouch - I love tea, and green tea is nice and refreshing.  I've received samples of Mighty Leaf's iced teas before but have never actually used them, so I'm going to make it a point to give this one (and the other one I have, I think it's mango flavored) a try.  I love Mighty Leaf's hot teas, so I'm sure I'll love their iced ones as well.
  • Noosa Yoghurt Coupon - This company is based in Colorado but they make their yoghurt the Australian way (and the Australian way to spell yogurt is with an h).  I hope I can find this in a store near me, because it sounds really delicious.  I'm going to try to find the Passion Fruit or Mango flavors.

Bottom Line: I'm very impressed with the Bestowed box!  I think that this is an excellent deal for $19 a month since it makes it so easy to discover new healthy food options.  Visit Bestowed to learn more about their boxes and sign up for a subscription!

September FAIR Treasure Review

I was pleasantly surprised when FAIR Treasure sent me a September box to review.  I was yet again impressed by their array of ethically sourced goodies!

I was really excited to see another piece of jewelry when I first opened the box, and I also love the little brown boxes they include because opening them up is like getting a second little surprise.  FAIR Treasure does an excellent job of giving background information on the people that created the items; it's wonderful to see what types of organizations are being supported.

The first item I received was the Mata Traders Chevron Necklace.  Mata Traders is quickly becoming one of my favorite jewelry brands, and this necklace was familiar to me (I've seen it before on Little Black Bag).  Gold jewelry is my favorite, and I love the chevron design and long chain.  I'm going to wear it tomorrow!  Mata Traders is based in India, and their jewelry is sourced by a large NGO that is a leading advocate for marginalized and exploited artisans.  They ensure that their workers receive living wages and safe working conditions, and they also guarantee that no child labor was used to produce their products.

The second item I pulled from the box was these beautifully colored Elephant Gift Cards by Indika Imports.  When I read "gift cards" I was thinking more of a stationery-type card you could write a message on, but these are actually gift tags (as you can see from the insert that was attached with them).  They are absolutely gorgeous and I almost don't want to part with them!  They're definitely big enough that you could write a short message if you wanted to (3.25" x 2"), and there were ten in the pack.  Indika Imports is also based in India, and they partner with several artisan organizations around the country to create employment opportunities.  They're focused on keeping traditional skills alive while raising ecological awareness and self-sustainability.

Last, but not least, is the Acacia Creations Olive Wood Pinch Pot.  I have to admit, I wasn't quite sure what to use this for when I took it out of the box.  Upon further investigation I learned that the term "pinch pot" refers to the way in which it's made, not how to use it.  I'm not entirely sure how this was pinched, since it's wood and not clay, but I'm not too concerned with the logistics.  What I do know is that this little bowl and spoon set is beautifully crafted and I can definitely make good use of it.  Acacia Creations is based in Kenya, and this pot was created by a man named Mutuku and his team.  They cover large areas to collect fallen wood, which they then turn into these beautifully hand-carved bowls.  This organization creates jobs, provides training, and gives back to the community through healthcare and education initiatives, from their studio in Nairobi to all across East Africa.

Bottom Line: FAIR Treasure has continuously sent me beautiful, fair-trade items.  I highly recommend this box, and I think that anyone who is interested in learning more about fair trade initiatives and new companies to support would be delighted by the treasures each month!

Cardinal Timothy Dolan and "Praying in Rome"

I don't usually post about books, but when this opportunity came along from Blogging For Books, it piqued my interest.  Cardinal Timothy Dolan was recently on The Colbert Report, a show that I don't personally watch but I know is popular with a lot of people.  I'm a practicing Catholic, and my faith is always evolving.  I know not everyone agrees with the church's stance on a lot of things, but I believe that religion is deeply personal, and that identifying with a sect doesn't necessarily mean you agree with every single decree.

That being said, I watched some of Cardinal Dolan's appearance and I liked that he was good humored and entertaining.  I think it shows that religion doesn't always have to be stiff and serious.  You can watch his interview below:

Praying in Rome contains Cardinal Dolan's personal reflections on his time in the Conclave that elected Pope Francis earlier this year and is available in e-book form.  You can purchase a copy at the Image Books website.

*Disclaimer: I received a free book in exchange for this post, sponsored by Blogging For Books.  I was not monetarily compensated.
